  • You may need to install unzip and curl, if they are not already installed.

    sudo apt-get install unzip
    sudo apt-get install php5-curl
  • You may need to enable mcrypt.

    sudo php5enmod mcrypt
  • Change to the plugins directory.

    cd wp-content/plugins
  • Get the UpdraftPlus zip file.

    wget http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/updraftplus.1.7.41.zip
  • Unzip UpdraftPlus.

    unzip updraftplus.1.7.41.zip
  • Remove the UpdraftPlus zip.

    rm updraftplus.1.7.41.zip
  • Create a directory for your local backups. Here it is called updraft. (You should probably set up an EBS volume for your backups so they are not on the same drive.) The directory permissions should be as follows.

    chmod -R 766 updraftplus/
    chown -R www-data:www-data updraftplus/
  • Go to the WordPress admin.
  • Select “Plugins” => “Installed Plugins” and activate UpdraftPlus.
  • Select “Settings” => “UpdraftPlus Backups”
  • Make sure you local backup directory is set up correctly.
  • Add the reporting email.
  • Info for remote backup coming soon …
